Dr Nzuki’s removal comes as the board’s parent ministry — the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism — is passing through a strong wave of post-Operation Tokomeza aftermath.

The wave has already swept a number of officials as a result of the damning report on the anti-poaching ‘Operation Tokomeza’, which came out with a number of findings on massive allegations involving a number of officials.

Announcing the removal, the minister, Mr Lazaro Nyalandu, could not explain more on the action at a news conference he held at the ministry’s headquarters in Dar es Salaam yesterday, opting for a written statement instead.

In a brief press statement signed by the acting ministry’s spokesman, Mr Nurdin Chamuya, Dr Nzuki will remain in the ministry where he will be assigned other duties. Mr Nyalandu said that earlier yesterday, he had met with a number of senior officials in the ministry to discuss the issue before arriving at the decision to remove Dr Nzuki.

The officials included the Deputy Minister, Mr Mohmood Mgimwa, the Permanent Secretary, Ms Maimuna Tarishi, and Deputy Permanent Secretary Mr Selestin Gesimba.

In addition to the managing director’s removal, Mr Nyalandu has also directed the Board to invite other qualified candidates from all over the world to submit applications within 21 days from today ready to fill the vacant but most important post.

Meanwhile, TTB Director of Marketing, Ms Devotha Mdachi, will act as managing director while the process to get a new CEO is underway. Dr Nzuki, who was appointed in 2010, took over from Mr Peter Mwenguo who retired in the same year. Mr Mwenguo is now deceased.

Prior to holding the position, Dr Nzuki served as an assistant professor at Salalah University in Oman. Meanwhile, the Moshi Resident Magistrate’s Court has issued an arrest warrant for the first accused person in the case of smuggling wild animals out of the country, Kamran Ahmed as he jumped bail, DEUS NGOWI reports from Moshi.

The case was meant to come up for a three – day consecutive hearing starting yesterday morning but the Pakistani did not show up.

He is co charged with three Tanzanians for transporting wild animals to Qatar. In the case that has attracted local and international attention, the accused persons are alleged to have smuggled out of the country more than 100 live animals and birds including four giraffes worth $ 113,715 on November 26, 2010.

Until midday, the time set by the Principal Resident Magistrate In-Charge, Mr Simon Kobelo, for the Court to establish the position of the matter and possibly witnesses continue adducing evidence for the Republic, Ahmed was still at large.

When the counsels were summoned in chambers at noon, his whereabouts being still unknown, Senior state attorneys, Ms Eveta Mushi and Mr Joseph Maugo, filed for warrant of arrest that was consequently issued by the presiding magistrate.

When the case came up for hearing on February 26 this year, the accused person did not turn up as well, but his advocate, Edmund Ngelema, told the Court that he had fallen ill and that he was due to see a physician.

The news of Ahmed’s illness came merely a day after the 20th witness testified how the live animals without necessary documents were loaded into a Qatar military plane in the presence of the accused person.

In criminal cases, accused persons have to be present during the trial even if are represented by a counsel. Ahmed is also facing other criminal cases including the one in Arusha in which he is charged of being in possession of fake US dollars and is out on bail in both cases.

Men head for the cut in Rukwa

The health sector in Rukwa Region has officially launched a noble campaign that will see young boys and men circumcising.

Rukwa Region Medical Officer Dr John Gurisha

The target has been set at 29,000 circumcisions by September, this year. Rukwa Region Medical Officer Dr John Gurisha revealed this at the weekend during the launching of the campaign held at Chala Dispensary in Chala Village which was officiated by the Nkasi District Commissioner, Mr Iddy Kimanta.

Dr Gurisha also urged young and elderly married men to turn up in large numbers as the practice would prevent their wives from contracting cervical cancer as well as being a useful hedge against contracting HIV infection.

He said that he was compelled to reveal all this following reports that many married young men aged 30 years and above refrain from undergoing the cut in the belief that it was not necessary for married men.

According to Dr Gurisha the national directive was to reach 29,000 males until September, this year, but todate only 7,000 of them have undergone circumcision.

On his part the Nkasi DC, Mr Kimanta cautioned parents and guardians against preventing their male children to undergo circumcision because it has several benefits including protecting them from contracting HIV infection. He urged local leaders and other members of the society to help enlighten any misguided young men on the critical matter.

He said it was imperative for all young men to know that circumcision would improve their lives and protect them from AIDS. Also he lauded Walter Reed HIV Programme Tanzania for being in the front line by supporting government efforts in preventing new HIV infections.

On his welcoming note the Rukwa Region HIV/AIDS Coordinator, Dr Hans Ulaya, said the campaign of circumcising males which started on March 17, this year at Chala, Korongwe, Muze, Ilemba, Kapozwa and Mkowe Health Centres would continue until the end of this month.

According to Dr Ulaya apart from the campaign, the exercise of male circumcision was carried out in Rukwa Regional Hospital in Sumbawanga town and at Mtowisa (in Sumbawanga District), Matai (Kalambo) Nkomolo and Kirando in Nkasi District. Medical literature has it that the best age to be circumcised is for pupils in Standard Six and Seven, who are in the active age group.

“If boys are circumcised, they can reduce HIV/Aids infection by 60 per cent,” added Dr Ulaya. According to Dr Ulaya, circumcision services started in 2011 with the aim of covering more than 300,000 men before 2015.

In the region’s strategies, the focus is on increasing public understanding on safe sex and to bring services to people living in risky areas.

According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, male circumcision (from Latin circumcidere, meaning “to cut around” is the surgical removal of the foreskin (prepuce) from the male sexual organ.

In a typical procedure, the foreskin is opened and then separated from the glands after inspection. The circumcision device (if used) is placed, and then the foreskin is removed. Statistics show that the HIV/AIDs prevalence in region has spiraled from 4.9 per cent in 2009 rate to 6.2 today.

According to the latest but chilling statistics, the situation in the region is, however, worse in Sumbawanga municipality, whose prevalence rate stands at 6.5 per cent. However, prevalence in Nkasi District is only 3.1 per cent.

The chilling information was revealed by Dr Gurisha, who said the prevalence was worsening in the region. “Even though the national HIV/ Aids prevalence rate has dropped to 5.7 per cent, in reality the situation is worsening in Rukwa region, standing at 6.2 per cent, up from 4.9 per cent in 2009/10,” according to a medical report.

Christine Creative and Fashion House comes barely one week after another fashion house, Doda, a joint venture by Colombe Ituze and St. Louis Johanne was opened in Kimironko.

The new fashion house is owned by Christine Mbabazi, a 23-year-old student of Mass Communication at Mt. Kenya University and presenter of the popular Overdrive show on Radio 10.

Speaking at the event, Mbabazi shed tears of joy during an emotional speech in which she described the opening of the house as a dream come true. It was a fulfilment of her childhood dream.

“Christine Creative and Fashion House is going to be unique in its own way. It’s going to deliver exactly what the customers want. You are free to walk in, order for what you need and it will be delivered to you within two days,” said Mbabazi

Mbabazi also makes jewellery and other accessories. She said it has been a long walk to ultimately fulfil her dream and told her audience to expect more from her new fashion house.

Mbabazi also talked of the challenges that have stalked her dreams, saying that at first she lacked the necessary support and venturing into the fashion industry was a risk she undertook because of her passion for designer clothes.

Guests were treated to some of her works with a number of Rwanda top models showcasing her beautiful clothes that left guests mesmerised.

Fred Masengesho, one of the people who attended the event, said that it was a memorable evening as this was the first fashion house of its kind to be opened in Remera.  He said that this showed that fashion industry in Rwanda has come of age.

The Rwanda Peace Cup champions depart aboard Qatar Airways. They will make a stop-over in Doha before connecting to El Jadida where the team is expected to reach on Wednesday morning ahead of the clash.

AS Kigali will have their work cut out in Casablanca as head coach Andre Casa Mbungo will be keen to build on the 1-0 first leg win to advance further in the competition.

“We are confident and ready to defend our goal so as to reach the next round. It seems tricky to many but we can work out a way of progressing. Our target is to defend this goal though we expect a tough challenge,” said Casa Mbungo.

AS Kigali have maintained their 100 percent home record in this year’s competition, which started in early February.  The team has played five matches, winning three at home, drawing one in Burundi and losing in Sudan.

On Saturday, teenage striker Jean Paul Niyonzima came off the bench to score the only goal of the encounter after 67 minutes.

It was the third successive win for the debutants, after registering the same goal margin in the previous matches against Burundian side Academie Tchite and Sudanese Ahly Shendi in the past two rounds.

Rwandan clubs don’t have a good record against North African teams and the stakes will be high for AS Kigali as they bid to become the first Rwandan club to win in that part continent.

Rwanda: Eymael tips players as league enters critical stage

Rayon Sports head coach Luc Eymael has tipped his players to win the remaining five Turbo King National Football league matches as the title race enters the final stage.

The Belgian expressed joy after the champions beat their archrivals APR 2-1 on Sunday to go top on goal difference—both teams are level on 49 points but Rayon have scored 44 goals and conceded 19 after 21 games, while the army side have scored 35 goals and conceded 12.

“I am glad that we won this game because it is not easy to defeat APR, they are a very strong team and we need to win this game to keep our title hopes on track. But we need to stay focused in the remaining five games,” Eymael told a post-match press conference.

The former AFC Leopards coach praised his side after dominating the game from start to finish. “I am particularly happy that we dominated them for almost the entire match, it’s not easy top outplay APR but we just did that, so I have to thank all the players because each of the put in a real shit,” Eymael explained before taking a cautious stand.

“But this is not the end of season, we have other five games to play so we need to stay focused and win every single game because to win the league, we have to win all remaining games.”

Midfielder Djamal Mwiseneza opened the scoring for the Nyanza-based side with a well taken shot from the edge of the box after just 13 minutes.

The experienced winger was left unmarked by full back Michel Rusheshangoga and he dribbled past Emery Bayisenge and Ismail Nshutiyamagara before unleashing thunderbolt which went underneath goalie Olivier Kwizera.

APR responded by leveling in the 30th minute with a perfect header from striker Michel Ndahinduka off a brilliant Rusheshangonga cross.

After APR’s equaliser, it was a balanced duel with both sides attacking with intent, but the Blues had the final laugh with left back Abouba Sibomana winning the contest with a sharp drive from the edge of the area in the 41st minute.

Second defeat

“It is unfortunate that we lost to Rayon Sports today.  However, we have to continue to fight until the end, it not over yet. We shall continue working hard and we shall keep our heads high and try to finish what we started,” APR interim coach Vincent Mashami said after his team’s second defeat of the season.

He added, “This result is going to motivate the players to work even harder in the next game and we believe we will do much better in remaining five matches.” With the country heading into the Genocide commemoration week (April 7-13), the next round of the league games will be played on the weekend of April 19-20 when Rayon Sports take on Etincelles and APR will be up against Musanze.

Cycling: Team Rwanda eye world championships

Under-23 Rwanda cycling national team (Team Rwanda U23) has set its sights on this year’s world championships scheduled for September 21-29 in Ponferrada, Spain.

Rwanda is in third position on the continent, behind Eritrea and Algeria. Africa will be represented by five countries, with Burkina Faso, Cameroon and Morocco fighting for the fourth and fifth slots.

Rwanda needs to do well in the remaining three Algerian international cycling races to qualify for the biggest cycling event for the first time ever.

Team Rwanda skipped Saturday’s Criterium International de Setif as the technical staff wanted the riders to rest before embarking on the next race of the Tour International de Constantine, which got underway yesterday and will run through Thursday.

The last two races, Circuit International d’Alger and Critérium International de Blida, will be held on March 28th and 29th, respectively.

Last week, Team Rwanda rider Valens Ndayisenga was named the best climber in Stage 2 of the Tour International de Setif in Algeria. The 19-year-old came in third position out of 72 riders.

Three days earlier, his teammate Jean Bosco Nsengiyumva had been named the best climber in Stage 3 of the Tour International de Blida.

Rwanda won two matches against Gambia and Swaziland before losing to Sierra Leone on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

A win in one of today’s two games will see them claim the only slot to Division 2, a feat the Rwanda Cricket Association are eyeing as it brings in more financial help from the international cricket body – ICC.

Rwanda is tied with Sierra Leone with six points but the former have a better run rate. Swaziland is third with four points, while Gambia lie bottom without a point.
